Countries at the UN presented their plans for reducing emissions

Berlin, Feb 1 (AFP) .- Most of the countries members of the Climate Change Convention and the UN have already submitted their plans for reducing pollutant emissions up to 2020, said today the UN Secretariat based in Bonn (West Germany).

From the Secretariat, would not specify the precise figures submitted by each country and added that details still missing some important nations, such as India.

In Climate Change Summit held in Copenhagen last December, the 192 Convention members agreed to submit these plans to reduce emissions to the UN until 31 January this year.

The Copenhagen agreement set targets for reducing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in developed countries, and voluntary actions suggested by some emerging nations like China, Brazil and India.

The European Union (EU) is committed to cutting its emissions by 20 percent through 2020 compared to 1990 levels, a commitment they are willing to raise to 30 percent if other countries make similar efforts.

Meanwhile, the U.S., the second largest polluter, behind China, proposed to limit its emissions by 17 percent over 2005, a proposal that elicited criticism from environmentalists who called him insufficient.

China, meanwhile, proposed to reduce its energy intensity (CO2 emission per unit of GDP) at between 40 and 45 percent over 2005.

The "Copenhagen agreement" is not binding after countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua refused to sign, which they thought was ambitious and unable to limit global warming to 2 degrees over 1900 levels.

Bonn in June to host a preparatory meeting for the upcoming Summit of Climate Change to be held later this year in Mexico, and which is expected to finally close to a binding agreement on the basis of the Copenhagen agreement.
